Monday, 8 March 2010

Students from the School of Journalism and Public Relations visited UNDP premises to learn more about what is UNDP doing in the area of environment, with a particular focus on the Hotspots Project.

Head of Environment Practice, Ms. Anita Kodzoman, informed them that environment has been one of the key focus areas of UNDP since the very beginning, with a large portfolio aiming to advance the country’s environmental protection standards and practices.UNDP National Hotspots Project Manager, Mr. Aleksandar Nacev gave a detailed presentation about all the activities that have been undertaken so far in the frames of the project. He emphasised that UNDP Country Offices in the Western Balkan countries developed a joint regional environmental programme in nine locations of their territories suffering the most from the legacy of polluting industries. The main goal of the 30 months programme, worth 15 million USD, is to ensure industrial renewal, environmental clean up and boost new economic initiatives. This will be achieved through improving the environmental situation and quality of life for citizens living around polluted areas in the most economical way, improving the local and national policy dialogue, institutional strenghtening  and increasing the supply of domestic professional services in the environmental management sector.
Following the presentation, the students accompanied the journalists on a field trip to the Bucim mine, where they had an opportunity to discuss with the citizens and local stakeholders.
