Hot Spots Project Starts Up in Bucim Mine, Radovis
The Cooper mine Bucim from Radovis will engage in handling the pollution through UNDP Project and the donation of USD 1.2 million from the Kingdom of Netherlands.
The mine also participates with equipment worth EUR 400,000. Yesterday, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Radovish, by the UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Maria Luisa Silva Mejias, and Mr. Vasilij Barutskij, General Director of Buchim, in the presence of the Dutch Ambassador to Macedonia, Ms. Simone Filippini. The money from the donation will be used for clearing the waste waters that flow in Buchimski Dol and Jasenov Dol Rivers, and for solving the so-called historical waste. First effects from the project are expected in two years. This is a very important project because it has goal to address the so called ecological hot spots, said Ms. Silva Mejias, UNDP Resident Representative in Macedonia. The project on reduction of the environmental pollution at the moment is being realized in five Balkan countries, and Macedonia is the sixth. “Nine locations that suffered most from the historical pollution of industries and which require industrial renewal, environmental clean-up and new economic initiatives, have been selected from total of six countries/territories in Western Balkans to be part of this biggest ever regional engagement in the area of environment protection and sustainable development. In Macedonia, Lojane and Buchim Mines have been identified in the national strategies and plans as priority environmental hot spots and will be the first pilot locations,” Ms. Silva Mejias announced. The citizens of the near by village Topolnica support this project, while UNDP experts working on the realization of this project said that the effect will soon be noticeable.
